Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field (PEMF), also called pulsed magnetic therapy and pulse magnetotherapy, is a non-invasive treatment to help heal soft tissue by pulsing magnetic fields through the tissue to promote repair at the cellular level. Our bodies naturally generate electromagnetic waves, and PEMF harnesses that power, focusing it to help us heal ourselves. At NorthStar HBOT in Tucson, Arizona, Dr. Henrick often uses PEMF in conjunction with hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
Repair & Rebuild with PEMF
As early as 1974, the medical community learned that a pulsed magnetic field can speed up healing. It’s important to note that PEMF is not only non-invasive, but also has no negative side effects. PEMF has become known as an effective treatment for post-surgical pain and swelling, most notably in instances of clinical plastic surgery. You may be more familiar with PEMF as an effectual treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, chronic wounds, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, insomnia and even depression.
What does a PEMF Treatment Involve?
A PEMF treatment lets you relax, first of all. For example, you may lie on the PEMF mat, reading a book while your body receives the healing electro-magnetic pulse. Or a simple coil may loosely wrap the injured area, such as a knee, emitting the pulsed electro-magnetic field directly to the affected area while you sit comfortably.
PEMF Therapy Benefits
It doesn’t take many treatments to begin to feel improvement! Just a few of PEMF’s numerous benefits:
- increased circulation
- better muscle function
- improved bone density and healing
- reduced inflammation and pain
- stronger immune system
Standard Precautions
Dr. Henricks may not recommend PEMF:
- if you are pregnant
- if you wear a pacemaker or have an insulin delivery system, or any other type of stimulator (batteries may be affected)
- if you have or have had TB
- if you’ve had malignancies
- if you take certain medications or have certain neurological diseases
